Night Heron

Last weekend I went birding in Central Park with my brother. You wouldn't think there would be a lot of bird species in the middle of New York City, but there are a ton! My favorite was the Black Crowned Night Heron... he looked like the villain in an animated Disney movie or something. I'd like to do a cartoon version of him at some point. Turning all the birds we saw into cartoon characters would be a great character design challenge. Anyway, here are a few quick sketches to start my morning.

B&W sketches

Haven't drawn a horse in a while! Quick sketch.

More messing around with black and white. This ink brush I'm using is super sensitive and really fun.

Breaking Bad sketchdump

Apparently I actually draw a lot when I'm sick? Anyway, been rewatching some Breaking Bad lately... I can't wait for August 11th.

Sick Sketches

I am sick and I'm having a hard time getting into the drawing mood, so I just sort of let my brain wander with some sketches to help me get started. I ended up with a few girls, one of the cutest dogs I've ever drawn, and Sherlock, because Benedict Cumberbatch is the only known cure for the common cold.

Doctors Who!

This is a commission I did a few months ago... all eleven Doctors from Doctor Who! I was going to wait until the 50th Anniversary of Who in November to post it, but yeah....no.

Prints and other things available at my Society6 shop!

Saga

Fan art Friday, woo! Yesterday I tweeted at Fiona Staples and she tweeted me back (yay!) so I decided to draw Alana and Marko from Saga.

Earthgazing

Floating in a tin can. Colored a sketch from the weekend as a warmup this morning. Space just gives me so many feelings. This drawing was partly inspired by this video by my favorite astronaut (who is no longer in space... sad face).

Also, this sorta turned out to be a continuation of a drawing from last year- link.

Spireseeker

I'm excited to talk about one of the current projects I'm working on. I was contacted by author E.D.E. Bell about doing the cover illustration for her new novel Spireseeker. It's a classic fantasy tale, and I've been having a lot of fun bringing her characters to life. The project has until June 5th to reach it's goal of $5000 on Kickstarter. I seriously recommend checking out the page and backing the project! Here's a link to the Kickstarter page. Below are the drawings I've done so far. The first images are a series of studies for the character Kick, and further down is a sketch of the front cover.

Below is a rough color comp for the front cover illustration.

Into Darkness

Crazy excited for Star Trek Into Darkness. Drew this while listening to the Wrath of Khan soundtrack... I've been careful not to look at any spoilers, but I just have a feeling...
Benedict KHANberbatch?

Cabin in the Woods

Finally got around to seeing The Cabin the Woods, which is written by Joss Whedon and directed by Drew Goddard (they both worked together on Buffy), and features a bunch of classic Whedonverse actors. I've never been a fan of horror movies, but seeing as this was more of a subversion of the genre, I enjoyed it a lot. It was really funny and very Joss.

Birds - Promotional Piece

Obviously, when I'm the most busy with freelance work is also when I decide to do some portfolio work. But I've been needing to do this for a while, so it's okay. I haven't ordered this as a postcard yet; I need to let it sit a few days, because I will inevitably notice something I want to fix. If you see anything that you think needs to be tweaked, let me know! Now is the time.
