Joss!

Today is Joss Whedon's birthday!

Anyone who knows me or this blog is aware of my love for Joss and his work. I've seen every episode of every show he's done. His knack for story and words and characters constantly astounds me, and he is my number one source of creative inspiration (more than any illustrator or visual artist). So naturally, I've drawn a decent amount of Whedony fan art over the years!

Joss has had a hell of a year. Now that The Avengers has come out, he's kind of... you know, famous, and it's strange that now lots of people are familiar with him. Part of me is bummed that he's so popular now, but most of me is super excited because hopefully now he can make whatever he wants!

Oh hey lady

I drew this a few days ago as a warm up sketch and kind of forgot about it until now. While browsing the internet the other night I stumbled across an image of a female Loki, and found out that it's something that actually happens in the comic book... because I guess Loki can take whatever form he wants. I was curious, so I googled Lady Loki and was immediately like... ugghhh. One of the things that bothers me about many comic books is the way that women are portrayed, especially in terms of their bodies and costumes. So naturally, I wanted to redesign the costume. Using the basic elements of the original, I came up with this. I just love the general concept of Loki's getup... those freaking horns.

Oh, and since Disney now owns Marvel, does that make Loki a Disney princess?
(Yes.)

And completely unrelated, here are two characters I drew for a commission:

NY Phil

So I had an impromptu trip to the city on Thursday to visit my brother. On Friday we had awesome seats to a NY Phil concert (student tickets ftw!). They played this awesome violin concerto by Erich Korngold (if you aren't familiar with Korngold you should check him out, particularly his score to 'The Sea Hawk', which might be the best thing ever), and the violinist was kind of ridiculously amazing. But the funny thing was that if you saw him on the street you would never think he was a classical violinist-- he looked more like he might be in a rock band, or like someone who might come to fix your computer. I love when people look differently than you expect them to.

The Avengers

THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN.
I drew these on my Cintiq... it was certainly the biggest project I've ever done completely digitally.

It was only a matter of time...

I'm drawing the Avengers. I usually start the summer by doing some massive group illustration. Last year it was Firefly, and the year before that it was Top Gear. I thought, why break the streak? So here's a sneak peek, Captain America.
'Murrica.

Tumblr Addiction

Tumblr is addictive. I've found that the most addictive part is checking the number of notes on an illustration after I've uploaded it. When something takes off, it can snowball like crazy and you can wrack up thousands of notes in a few hours. So the past few days I've found myself illustrating images that are specially designed for tumblr and the fandoms. And here's one of them:

It will only make sense if you've seen The Avengers, and even then it may not. Anyway, I enjoy tumblring, and while sometimes I feel guilty drawing fanart (as if I should be drawing original art instead), I have to remind myself that fanart shows off my work to the largest number of people, and is more responsible than anything else for getting me commissions. So the fanart wont be stopping anytime soon! (Oh, and it's also the most fun to draw...)
