September Randomness

Just a few random things from the past week or two. Here's a girl:

And here's a design that I was commissioned to do through Carolina Crown for a high school marching band.

And finally here's a drawing I did in between freelance projects. I enjoy the Green Lantern animated series because it's reminded me how much I want to work in animation. It's easy to get kind of complacent doing freelance and it's good to remember that animation is my goal. Plus I haven't watched any tv animation since Korra earlier this summer, and watching cartoons is just good for the soul.

A Character Design Ramble

Giancarlo Volpe, one of the animation directors on Avatar: The Last Airbender, is now producing a CG Green Lantern animated series on Cartoon Network. I've seen some of the show's characters pop up on Tumblr recently and I thought I might watch an episode or two. It's a fun series, the animation is really well done for a TV production, but my favorite thing about it is the character design. Volpe is producing the series along with Bruce Timm, whose distinctive style carries the look of the show. Timm is best known for his work in the DC Universe, particularly Batman: The Animated Series. I love his work. Below is a drawing of the character Razer, whose has one of my favorite designs. Adding GLTAS to the list of shows I'd like to work on :P

Volvagia - Comps

So my friends thought I should draw some Zelda bosses, and I thought that was the best idea ever.  Looong ago I did a drawing of Volvagia, a dragon from Ocarina of Time, and so I thought it might be fun to revisit it. So here are my comps for that. I'm really excited with how the final painting is coming along, and I'll probably finish it in the next day or two.

And just for a giggle, here's the last time I drew Volvagia, as a 16-year old. Yeaah.

So this happened.

I've been watching Star Trek: DS9 lately (or more like, my parents have been watching it, and I'll pop in and watch a few episodes with them). I love the Cardassians, particularly Garak and Dukat. They can be so friendly and do something genuinely good, and then they'll just do something incredibly horrible. Anyway, I have two freelance pieces due at the end of this week, and somehow my brain thinks it's ok for me to take a break from drawing by drawing.

The Ring

I watched a documentary on PBS tonight about the 'making of' the Ring Cycle at the Met Opera... it was really cool, and made me want to draw my own version of Brünnhilde.

Oh deer...

I've had copies for a while now of the children's book I finished earlier this summer for the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, but I've never gotten around to putting some photos up on here! So here are a few quickly-snapped iPhone photos of it... someday I'll get some better ones taken.

Late Night Whoodle

There was a new episode of Doctor Who tonight. It was silly and wonderful.

Circle Knight

This morning in my sketchbook I drew a bunch of different knights based on shapes... obviously this guy is a circle.

Hemingway and Color

I've always struggled with color, and I'm always trying to get better. This piece was an experiment with color and a new brush. It's based on A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, which I read earlier this summer.

"The coward dies a thousand deaths, the brave but one."
